Space Traveler Shares Mental Health Struggle After Wave of Backlash Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also included high-profile passengers.
The mission was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a social media post, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.
She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and performed experiments during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her heritage – was buried under the deluge of sexist vitriol.
She is best known for her pioneering work protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.
Finding Solid Ground
Months following reaching space, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the well-wishers whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.
She noted that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the mission, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and platforms for her activism.
About the Mission
The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of space.
The group of women also included accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
The venture behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company established by a well-known tech mogul.
