Similar to Storm Claudia tore through the northwest the prior day, the home side swept United away at the Etihad. It was a statement three goal victory for Andrée Jeglertz’s side owing to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a display that clearly signaled their championship potential as they strengthened their position at the top of the table.

Successive Defeats for United

This result signalled successive league defeats for Skinner's side for the first time since spring 2024, leaving them a significant margin off the top team with their trophy ambitions severely dented.

United’s ability to balance league and European soccer with a small team has been a widely debated issue since they earned a place in the Champions League. Looking at the schedule, it always seemed this was the matchday that would fully examine this capability. Sadly for the opposition, they looked tired from start to finish, the memorable win against PSG clearly having had an impact.

Lineup Adjustments

Marc Skinner had attempted to make changes with a several adjustments. Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all added vigor, although the exclusion of the on-form Melvine Malard to the substitutes caused surprise.

City, in contrast, have no similar fitness issues. Andrée Jeglertz made one adjustment from the previous win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her first start since returning from injury.

Dominant First Half

The trouble started to gather for the United boss and his team from the opening minute. This was a demonstration of the power from City whose potent offense controlled and dismantled the opposition with a sublime opening period display that saw them net a trio in 21 minutes.

This placed City completely dominant and left United all at sea. In advance of this encounter, the away side had allowed just six in this WSL season but they collapsed in the face of Manchester City's attacking flair.

Opening Threats

The early indicators came early when Vivianne Miedema used her strength to muscle Zigiotti off the ball, only to drag her shot past the post. Scoring Spree

They converted their dominance with almost half an hour played when Fujino won the home team a corner. A delivery to the back post was headed across goal by Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to nod home. It was City’s 7th headed goal of the season.

They increased their advantage with two more goals just before the half-time. When Jade Rose was able to maraud through the midfield from the back, the pitch became spacious for the hosts. The prominent Kerstin Casparij collected the pass on the wing before sending a precise ground pass for Shaw to tap home. Four minutes later, they had a third after a swift change in possession saw Lauren Hemp allowed the opportunity to drive a shot home from distance.

Final Period

The most obvious adjustment came from Skinner at the interval as Melvine Malard entered for Terland but by this time it was too late to shift the momentum of the contest. Ex- City player Park came closest, striking the woodwork, but the visitors were offensively poor and did not manage to produce a single shot on target.

The home side, on the other hand, could have extended their cushion when a delightful Vivianne Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it was insignificant to the hosts. After failing to beat any opponent who finished above them in the prior term, Jeglertz’s side now have victories against the Gunners and United to position them in a commanding situation after nine games.
